Thoughts on Shaving

Shaving—that time honored tradition of holding an extremely sharp instrument to your head when you’re still half asleep.

I started loosing my hair at a young age and by 30, I declared my hairstyle to be “bald is beautiful.” As such, I’ve bought a few razors overs the years and I can get into a shaving discussion with the best of gents.

When people ask me if I’ve used the Dollar Shave Club and seem surprised when explain that it’s (1) too expensive and (2) I wasn’t happy with the razors.

Don’t get me wrong, the shave club will save you money compared to purchasing razors at retail—which is nothing short of incredulous. In the past, I used the Mach3, Fusion, and other such multi-blade razors. Not what I use now, but we’ll get into that in just a moment.

At CVS (I don’t go to Walgreen’s), the Fusion razors are $36 for 8 razors— $4.50/razor. If you used just one razor a week that would come to $234 per year.

This is ridiculous.

The dollar shave club for a similar razor (1 per week) would be $108.00… for just the razors (or cartridges)…

On Amazon, you can get the name brand razor for $110.00 per year (1 per week) assuming you have a Prime membership (which is also about the same price you can get at the local warehouse club).

This is absolutely insane.

If you’re still using these razors and spending over $100/year on razors, not only are you wasting money… you’re also not getting a great shave.

For the last 3 years or so, I’ve been using what Yeni likes to call… the Grandpa razor. You may know it as the safety razor, and it’s the best shave I’ve ever had.

I personally use a Merkur brand handled razor (pick it up for $20 to $60, depending on your options) with Persona blades.

I get 100 blades for… wait for it… $11.72. Even better, these blades are so amazingly good, that I last well over a week with just one blade.

My last box of 100 blades lasted 2 years…. meaning a $200+ savings over the Dollar Shave Club.

Yes, using a safety razor has a learning curve. But if I can do it… anyone can.

I don’t shave with this razor because of how much money I save… this is just an amazing side benefit. I shave with the safety razor because it’s simply the best shave I’ve ever had.
