Kamailio Gets New Logo

To paraphrase the song, Feeling Good: It’s a new dawn It’s a new day It’s a new logo For Kamailio And I’m feeling good I’m feeling good Just in time to ring in the new year, Kamailio has introduced their new logo. Keeping in the nature of an open source project, the logo selection was conducted in the open and was open to users, developers, management, and anyone who wished to participate in the selection. ...

FCC Unwanted Call List? Not Yet

Recently, the FCC decided to publish their “informal consumer complaints about unwanted robocalls and telemarketing calls” to the interwebs. As someone critical of government transparency, I first want to give credit where due. Releasing this information is a great step forward. Good job! Now, if you’re using an open source VoIP system (such as Asterisk, FreePBX, FreeSWITCH, Kamailio, etc.) it would be very easy to automatically block these numbers from reaching your phone. ...

Kamailio 4.2.3, Update from git

Kamailio 4.2.3 has been released. Kamailio SIP Server v4.2.3 stable is out – a minor release including fixes in code and documentation since v4.2.2 – configuration file and database compatibility is preserved. So, if you’re updating from git, the simple way to update is: cd /usr/local/src/kamailio-4.2/kamailio (or your kamailio directory) git pull origin make all make install /etc/init.d/kamailio restart Problems? I had one… When I ran the git pull origin command, I kept receiving the error fatal: read error: Connection reset by peer....

Private Conversations should be Private

It’s a crazy concept… I feel that liberty allows us to communicate free from government interference. Whether this be business, personal, religious, or any other type of communication… our freedom of speech entitles us to freedom from monitoring our speech as well. With information from Edward Snowden (and now William Binney), we should be very concerned over the level of interference, eavesdropping, and surveillance conducted against all society. William Binney recently stated that the ultimate goal of the NSA was total population control. This should concern you an you’ve been warned about this before. ...

Your Phone Company is Watching

Back in 2012 or so, I posted a video hidden within a rant I had made. I rant from time to time. Scratch that. I rant a lot. I blog my rants from time to time. Anyway, I think about this video often. Malte Spitz asked his telephone company what type of data they had been collecting on him. An innocent question… what type of information are you collecting? The results astounded him and he effectively communicated why we should all be concerned....

Why I Love Kamailio

If we haven’t met yet, my name is Fred Posner. By day, I’m a VoIP Engineer and a baker (yes, a baker). Since I was a kid, I’ve loved telephones — everything about telephones. Dealing with phone companies and carriers started to eat away at that love… but VoIP brought it back. One of the products I get to work with is Kamailio. Many of you have never heard of this product. Even more cannot pronounce it. In a nutshell, Kamailio is an open-source SIP server. Now, if you’re not a techie, or know VoIP, then… Kamailio is about communication. Literally. The word Kamailio originates from the native Hawaiian language; translating “to converse.” Kamailio is open-source software allowing people (great, huge amounts of people) to communicate. Now, back to why I love Kamailio… ...

Kamailio Behind NAT

After returning home from AstriCon 10, I decided to start-up a new server and see how long it would take me to run a working Kamailio server behind NAT (on a private IP). Bottom line? About 30 minutes. I was lucky to help staff the Kamailio booth this year and was honored to help so many other VoIP professionals (and enthusiasts) with their questions about Kamailio, so without further ado…...

Hi. My name is Fred, and I'm a Kamailian.

I got thrown into VoIP in a sink or swim situation — and thankfully, I’m a strong swimmer. I’ve talked previously about my love of phones. Growing up in New York City, my family would purposely avoid walking on certain blocks to avoid me seeing pay-phones. As a child, I loved phones. I still love phones. My love of phones made me what I am today. I am a Kamailian. ...
