I’m not a programmer. Never tried to pass myself off as one — which made for a really, really awkward interview once… but that’s another story.

Anyway, I’ve been creating “APIs” in Perl for a while using Perl CGI on NGINX. It’s not a REST API whatsoever, but I enjoy scripting in Perl and (1) got the job done, (2) was fast, and (3) no learning curve.

Astricon 2019 Thoughts

TL;DR A few weeks ago, I had some strong concerns over Sangoma’s stewardship of Asterisk and FreePBX. Since that post, Astricon showed that Sangoma definitely appreciates the open source VoIP community and I’m optimistic for the future.

I, along with 300+ others, attended Astricon 2019 during the last week of October in Atlanta, Georgia. This year’s Astricon differed dramatically from others — there was no expo hall, fewer presentations, fewer tracks.

Sangoma Doesn’t Get Open Source

So, earlier today (2019-09-24), Sangoma tweeted the following:

If you don’t know, just over a year ago, Sangoma acquired Digium, the creators of Asterisk (which Sangoma called “the most widely used open source communication software in the world”). Sangoma is also the owner of FreePBX, “the most widely deployed open source PBX platform in use across the world.”

ClueCon is a conference for developers by developers: an annual technology conference held every summer hosted by the team behind the FreeSWITCH open-source project.

As expected, I had a wonderful time meeting new Kamailians from across the globe as well as catching up with friends from years past.

My Thoughts on Enterprise Connect

This year I decided to head down to Orlando and catch the Enterprise Connect show. Usually, the VoIP shows I attend deal with open source products and target Developers (as well as users, purchasers, etc). Enterprise Connect mostly highlights non-open source telephony offerings from such companies as Cisco, Slack, Microsoft, Avaya, etc.

After a few days here in beautiful Orlando, I still am not sure who Enterprise Connect had in mind for a target audience. Did they want those with technical skills? Not sure– none of the talks really went into anything technical. Decision makers? Influencers? No idea.
