2016 in Review

TL/DR; — I’m older, fatter, and even more bald (if possible). In January, Yeni and I did something crazy… we finally took a honeymoon. Sure, some people do this right after getting married. Some might even take a honeymoon during their first year. We decided to wait 6 years and it was worth the wait. You probably already guessed that we took a Disney cruise. You’d be right. We headed out on the Disney Dream for a 4 day cruise of the Caribbean and we cannot wait to go again. We loved every minute and started the year on an incredible high. When we hit land, normal life greeted our arrival and it was back to work— Yeni headed to the bakery and I headed to ITEXPO. ...

Kamailio, TLS, and LetsEncrypt

If you don’t know me… my name is Fred, and I’m a Kamailian. Kamailians are users of Kamailio— an open source SIP server capable of building large scale Voice platforms. It’s a great product, and in a different post I discuss why I love Kamailio. Today, I want to talk about TLS, Kamailio, and Lets Encrypt. ...

Receiving SMS from Flowroute with Perl

Flowroute, a SIP service provider, recently enabled SMS on all of their phone numbers (DIDs). This means that if you have a DID from Flowroute, your phone number can now be used to send and receive SMS messages. This article will show you how you can receive those SMS messages with Perl. (You can skip the background to get to that part quicker.) Background I first learned about Flowroute at Astricon 2008 (Phoenix, AZ)....

Alex Balashov Discusses High Performance Kamailio Tuning

I’ve discussed why I love Kamailio many times on this site — and the Kamailio community remains a strong reason for my love of the project. Alex Balashov, a VoIP Engineer and member of the Kamailio project, is a VoIP expert and his knowledge of Kamailio, SIP, and telecommunication is without question. He also happens to be the fastest typist I’ve ever seen (seriously, it’s almost distracting). ...

AstriCon Comes to the Sunshine State

First, some history. I attended my first AstriCon back in 2008 and somewhere, I still have my Skype for Asterisk button. At the close of the conference Digium asked for comments—I suggested that the convention look at Orlando, Florida. Back then, I traveled from Michigan (the dating Yeni period), yet I still maintained a strong bias for Florida. I thought (with the exception of Australia/Asia) Florida could provide both a convenient travel point (for both International and domestic travelers) as well as combine the possibility of a family vacation in the Sunshine State. Seven years later, AstriCon 2015 granted my wish and I attended Astricon2015 in beautiful Orlando, Florida....

FCC Unwanted Call List? Not Yet

Recently, the FCC decided to publish their “informal consumer complaints about unwanted robocalls and telemarketing calls” to the interwebs. As someone critical of government transparency, I first want to give credit where due. Releasing this information is a great step forward. Good job! Now, if you’re using an open source VoIP system (such as Asterisk, FreePBX, FreeSWITCH, Kamailio, etc.) it would be very easy to automatically block these numbers from reaching your phone. ...
