APIBAN now integrates with fail2ban

We have a new go(lang) based APIBAN client that will send IP addresses directly to your chosen fail2ban jail. The new client comes to us from concerns of FreePBX users of fail2ban fighting iptables additions. There’s other benefits for freepbx users, including seeing IP addresses in the GUI, etc. There’s also a super simple, lazy install method: curl -sSL https://raw.githubusercontent.com/apiban/apiban-fail2ban/main/install.sh | bash -s -- APIBANKEY (where APIKEY is your APIBAN API KEY)...

Astricon 2024/ITEXPO

I won’t be attending Astricon this year. Once again, Astricon has co-located with ITEXPO in beautiful Fort Lauderdale, similar to the old Asterisk World events (that Sangoma ended soon after acquiring Digium). Astricon, in past years, attracted an audience of more than 1000 attendees, a decent sized expo (focused on open source telephony), and multiple presentation tracks held over several days. This year, similar to last year’s Astricon, the conference will be a single track and (new for 2024) only one day long....

Sangoma Still Doesnt Get Open Source

Disclaimer: The views expressed in this post are solely my personal views and opinions. These do not necessarily represent the views and opinions of any company or project that I am (or have been) associated with. Back in 2019 (around 3.5 years from this post), I blogged that Sangoma Doesn’t Get Open Source. The post generated a decent amount of discussion and later that year, Dan Jenkins and I sat with Bill Wignall and made commitments about future conferences, handling “open source,” and stopping FUD....

ITEXPO 2022

Well, ITEXPO 2022 has come and gone. I think there were perhaps 2-3 other people at the conference who wore a mask. This said, I did return home without covid… The presentation was interrupted by a fire alarm. Apparently some idiot decided it would be fun to smoke in the bathroom. Wasn’t cool in the 80s, still isn’t cool today. Anyway… Unfortunately, coordination was very lacking at the event and no information regarding extending time made it to any of the presenters/attendees in our room....

Thoughts on the Astricon 2023/ITEXPO announcemnent

Sangoma recently announced that Astricon 2023 will be co-located with ITEXPO in Fort Lauderdale. Here’s their exact announcement: With tremendous excitement, we officially announce the return of an in-person AstriCon. We will ease into the in-person event by co-locating AstriCon at ITEXPO on February 13-17, 2023, in beautiful Fort Lauderdale, Florida. The longest-running open source convention, AstriCon, celebrates open source projects featuring Asterisk and FreePBX. The event will include two tracks, sessions, and an EXPO hall....

Astricon 2019 Thoughts

TL;DR A few weeks ago, I had some strong concerns over Sangoma’s stewardship of Asterisk and FreePBX. Since that post, Astricon showed that Sangoma definitely appreciates the open source VoIP community and I’m optimistic for the future. I, along with 300+ others, attended Astricon 2019 during the last week of October in Atlanta, Georgia. This year’s Astricon differed dramatically from others — there was no expo hall, fewer presentations, fewer tracks. ...

Sangoma Doesn’t Get Open Source

So, earlier today (2019-09-24), Sangoma tweeted the following: Is it possible to outgrow an #opensource #PBX? As your business grows, you might need to move to a more business-oriented solution with enhanced features & support. New blog at https://t.co/SvhwvcKARO #phonesystem — Sangoma (@Sangoma) <a href="https://twitter.com/Sangoma/status/1176564577670172672?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">September 24, 2019</a> If you don’t know, just over a year ago, Sangoma acquired Digium, the creators of Asterisk (which Sangoma called “the most widely used open source communication software in the world”). Sangoma is also the owner of FreePBX, “the most widely deployed open source PBX platform in use across the world.” I found it interesting that a company owning arguably two of the most widely used open source telephony projects in the world would discuss “outgrowing” open source… ...

Asterisk World 2018

Friends, this Valentine’s day you will find me in beautiful Fort Lauderdale, Florida at the 2018 Asterisk World! Sure, I could have chosen to help out at the bakery during this time… or even to spend Valentine’s Day with the Mrs… but this was an easy decision. ...

Receiving SMS from Flowroute with Perl

Flowroute, a SIP service provider, recently enabled SMS on all of their phone numbers (DIDs). This means that if you have a DID from Flowroute, your phone number can now be used to send and receive SMS messages. This article will show you how you can receive those SMS messages with Perl. (You can skip the background to get to that part quicker.) Background I first learned about Flowroute at Astricon 2008 (Phoenix, AZ)....
